2009 will mark Lincoln County’s inaugural participation in World Laughter Day. Capitan has an established laughter club, “Laughter Happy Hour” that meets the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from May through September, lead by local Laughter Coach Michele Caskey. “Everyone needs to be laughing now more than ever. I see people drowning in stress and worry. Laughter is the bodies own mechanism for releasing adverse adrenaline stuck in our body from too much stress. When you laugh your body experiences a physical relaxation and a calming of the mind.” Caskey believes that everyone can add more laughter to their lives by learning a few laughter exercises and beginning to laugh for no reason, even when nothing seems particularly funny.
The Lincoln County World Laughter Day festivities will run from 1-3pm on Sunday, May 3 and will include: An opening and closing laughter circle, a silly parade and root beer floats (which are universally believed to be a silly food). Michele Caskey, organizer of the event says “We will decorate ourselves as parade floats using streamers, luau leis and other silly things.” Participants are encouraged to bring pool toys, rubber chickens, grass skirts, crazy hats, old prom gowns, pineapples, umbrellas, wax lips, fake eyelashes, feather boas, kites, ukuleles, imaginary friends, helium balloons and other things that make them feel outrageous and encourage an atmosphere of ridiculousness. The event is open to children and adults who would like to laugh for no reason along with people of all nations around the world on this celebratory day. Seriously!
The first Laughter Yoga Club was started on 13th March, 1995 in a public park in Mumbai, India by Dr. Madan Kataria, a family physician who prescribed laughter as a supplemental treatment for common ailments related to stress such as insomnia, high blood pressure and migraine headaches. Laughter yoga exercises were developed to teach people how to laugh for no reason for 20 minutes a day or more. A dedicated practice of laughing such as this causes physical improvements to the body. The concept is now fast sweeping the world with more than 6000 laughter clubs in more than 60 countries. This revolutionary idea has changed the lives of hundreds and thousands of people around the world and has helped them to attain a state of complete wellness. The first World Laughter Day was held three years later in Mumbai in 1998 and more than twelve thousand members from local and international laughter clubs joined together in a mega laughter session and street parade.
